New Canon PowerShot SD980 IS unboxing and impressions

Canon PowerShot SD980 IS unboxing and impressions

Canon held off about as long as it could, but it finally caved to the pressures of adding a pressure-sensitive screen to one of its Digital ELPHs. The SD980 IS goes down as the first-ever touchscreen PowerShot, offering a better-than-average set of specifications, a few color options, an attractive size and a 720p movie mode that helps to set it apart from some of its VGA-quality contemporaries. We took the cam for a quick spin just to see how Canon's adaptation of the touchscreen felt in real-world use, and we've posted up our impressions -- along with a few sample galleries and a raw 720p video clip -- just beyond the break.

Casio Launches New Exilim EX-FS10 Camera Is Also Your Smarmy Golf Pro

Smile shutters. Blink warnings. Fart detectors. Point and shoot cameras have been stuffed with gimmicks for years, but the arms race isn't ending any time soon. Casio just added golf swing analyzation to their Exilim line.

From what we can tell, you have a buddy hold the EX-FS10 while you hit balls at the range or on the course. The camera takes a look at the angles of your swing posture, then it chastises you with fierce blue and red lines. (Meanwhile, your buddy will purely use profanity.)

Otherwise, the Casio Exilim EX-FS10 is a typical, 9.1MP camera with perks like 1000fps burst mode, 720P video recording and 3x optical zoom. No word on price, but I think it's worth assuming that the camera is available only in Japan for the time being. [Akihabara News][Source]

New ViewSonic VPC08 keeps Windows XP,

The xpPhone isn't even out yet and already it has competition. ViewSonic has announced its own take on the idea of a phone with Windows XP as the OS, in the form of the VPC08. With an Intel ULV processor, half a gigabyte of RAM, and 8GB of storage, it has just about enough to let you run XP productively, and once you open up the clamshell casing you'll find a 4.3-inch display and a full QWERTY keyboard to do it with. The outside is adorned with a 2 megapixel camera, plus a 2-inch screen and numeric keypad for your old school phone needs. An asking price of $800 and what we suspect to be pretty atrocious battery life will likely be the biggest hindrances on this device's path to respectability, but all the same, we totally wanna play with one. You should mosey on past the break to find a picture of the retro-looking externals.

Epson P-6000 and P-7000 get tethering capabilities

Epson has added new tethering capabilities to its Epson P-6000 and P-7000 multimedia photo viewers, where it will enable photographers to preview and save images to the viewer the moment after they are shot, helping streamline the entire process of conjuring your backup files while assisting in image evaluation regardless of location. Of course, this would mean hooking up a DSLR camera to either the Epson P-6000 or P-7000 photo viewer through the use of a USB cable. What do you think - will the layman appreciate such a feature, or only those who snap photos for a living?
